Engineering Honors Program

One outstanding program. Two unique tracks.

Track 1: Engineering Honors Research Scholars

Summary of Requirements (24 credits)

Honors Scholar Cornerstone (3 credits)

HON 101 –Introduction to critical thinking, scholarly inquiry, and diversity of perspective through an interdisciplinary approach; small, discussion-based course capped at 20 students per section. Topics may vary and tend to be focused on contemporary issues/problems.

Honors Experiences (6 credits)

Flexible structure allowing students to design their own experiences:

  • Undergraduate honors research (1-3 cr/semester)
  • Study abroad experience
  • Service learning courses
  • Internship/cooperative learning experience at a National laboratory
  • Graduate/Undergraduate research seminars

Honors Elective Seminars (12 credits)

These courses, sections and seminars will highlight contemporary problems of interest to engineers and are taught by top faculty with engaging pedagogy:

  • ENGR 340HON (honors section)
  • ENGR 201, 202, 203 and/or 206 honors section
  • EE 206 honors section
  • Other engineering courses that have an honors section
  • Essential Studies course honors sections

Senior Honors Project (3 credits)

Capstone design course honors section (with Engineering faculty member as advisor)

Track 2: Engineering Honors Leaders in Action

Summary of Requirements (24 credits)

Honors Leadership Cornerstone (3 credits)

HON 102 – Introduction to leadership and democratic citizenship through interdisciplinary and historical approach; emphasis on problem-solving in local community; small, discussion-based course capped at 20 students per section.

Honors Experiences (6-9 credits)

Flexible structure allowing students to build their own leadership focused program:

  • Participation in the CEM Grand Challenges program
  • Service learning
  • Internship/co-op with a company or national laboratory

Honors Elective Seminars (9-12 credits)

These courses, sections and seminars seek to refine leadership, global awareness, and public service skills and associated knowledge: 

  • ENGR 340HON (honors section)
  • ENGR 201, 202, 203 and/or 206 honors section; EE 206 honors section
  • Jodsass Engineering Leadership seminars
  • Other engineering or Essential studies course honors sections related to leadership

Senior Honors Project (3 credits)

Capstone design course honors section (with Engineering faculty member as advisor)

Benefits to Being in the Engineering Honors Program

  • Priority registration each semester for your classes.
  • Accomplish ES credits while simultaneously earning Honors status designation.
  • Eligibility for tuition waivers reserved for high achieving Honors students.
  • Graduation with distinction: the Honors status will be designated on your transcript, diploma, and you will receive an Honors cord for the graduation ceremony.
  • A community of Honors peers and faculty who learn, engage, and grow together through classes and exciting programming limited to Honors students, as well as individualized mentoring for fellowships and scholarships.
  • A contemporary Honors space, including classrooms and lounge area exclusively for Honors students.
  • Optional Honors Living and Learning Community in Selke Hall.

FAQs

If I sign up for a track, must I stay in that track until graduation?

No. You may switch tracks at any time, and count the courses you’ve taken already for your new track.

What are the requirements for graduating with Honors?

To graduate with Honors distinction, you must complete the 24 required credits and maintain a 3.2 overall GPA throughout your academic career. In addition, to maintain a tuition waiver, you must maintain this GPA every semester.
