Leaders Can Come From Anywhere, But They Go Here.

Each UND student embarks on a journey to become a leader. It's work worth doing, making a positive impact locally, nationally and beyond.

Meet Our Students

Leaders in Online Programs

UND has been offering a distance engineering program for more than 30 years (starting with VHS tapes of lectures being mailed out to our distance students!), being the first university to offer an accredited engineering program via distance in most of our majors.

For students pursuing a degree online, our online delivery mode offers an opportunity to complete the majority of their undergraduate degree coursework remotely. They get the same degree as the campus students, but can watch lectures in a format that fits their schedule.

In most programs, students are required to complete their engineering laboratory requirements through condensed summer courses in person at UND (except Electrical Engineering & Computer Science which utilize virtual labs and at-home kits). Since our online students experience the same lectures and coursework requirements as our on campus students, we consider this education experience to be essentially equivalent and our online graduates receive the same accredited degrees, career prospects, and recognition as our campus students.

Real Research. Real Results.

In February 2025, UND ascended to Carnegie R1 status. Institutions that are classified as Carnegie R1 have “very high research activity.” This denotes that the institution has annual research expenditures exceeding $50 million and awards at least 70 research doctorates each year. The College of Engineering & Mines logged $19.7 million in sponsored research expenditures in 2025, supported by 190 active awards from 72 unique sponsors. That output, spanning national security, hypersonics, water quality and more, is central to UND earning its place alongside other Carnegie R1 institutions.

Accreditation

ABET accreditation is the gold standard in technical education, and it signals to students, employers and the profession that an undergraduate program meets rigorous, industry-driven criteria for quality. Graduates of ABET-accredited programs are better positioned for licensure, graduate school admission and careers with employers who recognize the credential. Our faculty continuously evaluate and improve curriculum against national benchmarks to deliver the professional preparation the field demands.

ABET-Accredited Undergraduate Engineering Programs

The following programs are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET:*

Biomedical Engineering (B.S.)

Chemical Engineering (B.S.)

Civil Engineering (B.S.)

Electrical Engineering (B.S.E.E.)

Geological Engineering (B.S.)

Mechanical Engineering (B.S.)

Petroleum Engineering (B.S.)

ABET-Accredited Undergraduate Computing Programs

The B.S. in Computer Science program is accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET.

Computer Science (B.S.)

Accreditation in Progress

New programs will be eligible to be accredited after they produce their first graduates. We fully expect these programs to be ABET accredited and grandfather in our first graduates due to the experience and strength of our programs.

  • Aerospace Engineering (B.S.)

* Please note that our online and in-person degree options are equivalent and accredited as the same degree from ABET regardless of amount of online content. Even though programs have the option for significant online content, most of our programs will not be listed as an “Available 100% Online” degree with ABET, as they do require some in-person labs, with the exception of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, which do have a 100% Available Online listing with ABET.
