Energy Studies

CEM Energy Studies focuses on the integration of energy education, training, research and outreach.

We enable the development of the next generation of energy graduates and professionals who can unlock and facilitate the advancement of energy technologies that are economically competitive, reliable, sustainable, and politically and environmentally acceptable.

Skills That Drive the World Forward

In recognition of North Dakota's vast energy resources - lignite coal, oil and gas, wind, solar, biomass and other energy resources - it is essential that the University of North Dakota (UND) develop students and professors that can play a positive role in the clean, efficient, and sustainable development of these precious resources through education and research.

Tied to the academic mission of the college, the CEM Energy Studies inspires the creation of new knowledge that educates and trains the next generation of energy graduates and professionals, enables the development of revolutionary energy technologies, and establishes advanced technologies required to make affordable emissions-free energy systems a reality.

Program Design

Our program is designed to provide aspiring and professional energy engineering graduates with an in-depth understanding of energy systems, as well as  the business, policy and advanced project management skills needed to face the challenge of a constantly changing world including the complex problems of how to meet clean and sustainable energy needs.

Our goal is to provide a well-balanced education and research platform, so that our graduates are prepared to meet the diverse needs of the current dynamic energy market. We use a non-biased approach to develop technical, environmental, political, social, and economic information for use by the energy industry as it sets its future course.

  • Production of Liquid and Gaseous Fuels
  • Environmental Cleanup and Protection of Air, Water, and Soil, focusing on Energy- and Industrial-Generated Sources.
  • Integration of Social, Political, Regulatory, and Legal Concerns into the Development and Implementation of New Technologies.

Research Labs and Equipment

The College of Engineering and Mines Energy Studies collaborates with the College of Engineering and Mines Research Institute for labs and equipment to help advance research in energy technologies.
