He is a member of the North Dakota State Bar Association having served on its Board of Governors, a member of its Title Standards Committee and has chaired the Real Property, Probate and Trust Law Section of the Bar for over 25 years. He has been a part of the past leadership of the American Bar Association. He is a frequent speaker at legal continuing education seminars and a contributor to the North Dakota State Bar Review and a member of the adjunct faculty at the University of Mary where he teaches business law in the graduate program. He is admitted before all North Dakota and Minnesota courts, the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals and the United States Supreme Court. Shaft is active in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Fargo and is a member of the Bishop’s Finance Council. Shaft resides in Grand Forks with his wife Jackie. They have three children, John, a law student at Notre Dame, Madeline, a theology major at Notre Dame, and Francine, a junior at Red River High School.
