Cold Spray Cell
The cold spray system was designed and sold by CenterLine's Supersonic Spray Technologies (SST). This is a low pressure system and is able to repair and coat ductile materials. The cold spray system is composed of a cold spray gun which contains a 42kW heating element with a converging/diverging nozzle. Powder is also injected into the supersonic stream of carrier gas within the gun. Cold spray system also contains dual powder feeders, which can be loaded with 400mL each of powder or grit. This system is controlled by a touch-sensitive CPU with which all process parameters can be adjusted and monitored. Adjustable parameters include temperature of heating element, inlet pressure and powder feed rate. Monitor graphs of temperature, pressure and time are saved in the CPU and can be loaded to an external computer.

This system also requires a supply of carrier gas at a pressure of 80-125 psi and a feed rate of 20-25 cubic feet per minute. This air must be dry and clean of all contaminants. To supply this, a gas delivery system has been constructed containing six cylinders of oxygen and six cylinders of nitrogen connected in parallel. The pressure is controlled by a regulator that accepts inlet pressures of 2500 psi and delivers appropriate outlet pressures to the cold spray unit. In order to control powder flow rates and establish a more uniform powder deliver system, an optional powder feeder was added. This powder feeder can deliver powder at specified volumes by controlling the revolutions of a conveying disk inside a pressurized and heated container.

The spray nozzle is mounted on the end of a Motoman HP6 industrial robotic arm, which features six-axis motion with a 13 pound payload. This robot has repeatable movement to within 0.003 inches and has horizontal and vertical reach of 54 inches and 63 inches respectively.
The work pieces will be processed on top of a downdraft filter table. This table will pull all overspray down through a set of filters which reduces airborne contamination as well as maintains a clean working environment, thereby reducing the flammability and explosion risk of airborne particles.
