Petroleum Engineering Industrial Affiliates Program
The Petroleum Engineering Program at the University of North Dakota was approved and established in the summer of 2010. Students at UND can now declare Petroleum Engineering as a major and begin their program of study. In order for the Petroleum Engineering Program at UND to establish a presence as a globally competitive “Premier” program, the formation of partnerships with industry is essential.

The Petroleum Engineering Program proposes to form the Petroleum Engineering Industrial Affiliates Program to align the education and research efforts of UND’s Petroleum Engineering with industry needs. The vision for the Petroleum Engineering program is to educate future generations of Petroleum Engineers who can contribute to building a better world through professional service and research for safe, reliable, and affordable energy production and environmental protection. The industrial affiliates program will provide industry with the ability to invest in the petroleum engineering program by providing program direction, student scholarships, faculty development opportunities, student research opportunities, and forums for review of progress and defining future directions.
The Petroleum Engineering program is designed to provide students with a systems understanding of the petroleum industry that includes: science and technology; economics and business; policy and regulation; and society and behavior. These four components are built on a foundation of ethics, safety, and engineering/geology fundamentals. In addition, the students will gain an appreciation for scale, integration, and complexity of the globally evolving petroleum industry.
The overall goal of the industrial affiliates program is to engage petroleum industry in the process of developing the next generation of petroleum engineers. The goal of the program will be met through achieving the following specific objectives:
- Obtain input from industry on educational needs and directions for petroleum engineers
- Undergraduate research funding
- Undergraduate scholarships
- Forums to provide industry, students, and faculty to review program progress.
