Vision
“The University of North Dakota Institute for Energy Studies educates the next generation of energy experts and pursues new frontiers in energy research that enables the development of integrated energy technologies that are economically competitive, reliable, sustainable, and politically and environmentally acceptable.”
Mission
Outreach - engage stakeholders, including the general public, civic leaders, industry leaders and public officials to enhance education and research opportunities.
Education - develop energy experts who are cognizant of the issues facing the energy industry by engaging students in education focused on the technical, social, political, environmental, and economic needs of the world-wide community.
Research - build a multi-disciplinary scientifically balanced research portfolio aimed at accelerating the implementation of efficient, clean, affordable, and reliable energy production technologies.
Goals
To provide infrastructure that will enable UND to be a “Premier Energy University” that:
- trains the next generation of energy experts
- inspires the creation of new knowledge that enables the development of revolutionary energy technologies
- establishes advanced industries required to make affordable emissions free energy technologies a reality
- inform and educate stakeholders and policymakers to assist them in making energy-related decisions

Why does the IES exist? - We aspire to think differenty and challenge the status quo in the deveopment of new advanced concepts for low cost clean energy.
How do we do it? - Inspire students, staff, and faculty to challenge current thinking and spark innovative ideas.
What do we do? - Develop processes and technologies to produce energy, protect the environment, and build the economy. - Solve near term problems while looking towards the future.
