Geology & Geological Engineering
Our mission is to provide an exciting and inspiring intellectual community dedicated to learning about and sharing an understanding of geological processes, environments, and resources.
Our vision is to be extraordinary in providing our students the skills and knowledge necessary to excel in their professional careers, in conducting research that advances theoretical and applied sciences, and in delivering outreach services that are relevant and responsive.
Harold G. Hamm, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer for Continental Resources, grew up in Oklahoma and has become one of the country's greatest philanthropists and the key player in bringing the U.S. closer to petroleum self-sufficiency. Working in the oil fields as a teenager, Mr. Hamm soon went on to establish Continental Resources in 1967, the corporation that in 2004 demonstrated the economic viability of horizontal-directional drilling combined with hydraulic stimulation for enhancing petroleum recovery. Mr. Hamm is internationally recognized as the pioneering leader for this game-changing development, initiated in the Williston Basin's tight oil-bearing Bakken Formation. As a beneficiary of his generous support, the Harold Hamm School of Geology and Geological Engineering at the University of North Dakota was established in the fall of 2012 .
The financial support of Mr. Hamm and Continental Resources has assisted students working in all Earth science subdisciplines by offering scholarships and funds to support research in addition to providing the School with cutting-edge analytical equipment and other resources. We thank Mr. Hamm for his generosity!
